This inspection occurred in order to observe the sampling activities taking place at the Deakins
Pit on February 2, 2012. Steve Baker, the Operator, and Ben Langenfeld, with Greg Lewicki and
Associates, L.L.C., were present.
Sampling at the site was determined to be necessary in order to determine whether imported
material used for backfill along the north slope of the pit was inert, and to determine if the
placement of this material into the backfilled slopes at the site could potentially have a negative
effect on the groundwater quality in the area.
During this inspection, waypoints were located with a Garmin GPS. Points are tabled following
this report.
Prior to this inspection, two piezometers had been installed along the east permit boundary at
waypoints 38 and 39. Groundwater samples were taken from each of the two piezometers. An
additional groundwater sample was taken from the pit water, just below a seep in the pit wall, at
waypoint 40.
Nine auger holes were drilled by Odell Drilling, Inc., with a track mounted drill rig, into the
backfilled material along the north side of the pit. Seven samples of the backfilled material were
collected from holes located at waypoints 41, 42, 44, 45, 46, 47, and 48. Two holes drilled at
waypoint 43 encountered the native gravel material and samples were not taken. Three of the
collected samples (waypoints 41, 44 and 46) were selected for SPLP testing, based on the
location of the sample point and visual inspection of the material.
The groundwater samples (3) and backfill material samples (3) were taken by Ben Langenfeld
for delivery to a laboratory.
