The goal of this sampling program was to gather ground water and backfill
samples for chemical testing. The program was observed by Steve Baker of 3B Enterprises,
Dustin Czapla of CDRMS, and conducted by Ben Langenfeld of Greg Lewicki and Associates.
Groundwater samples were taken from two piezometers that had been installed on January 26,
2012 on the east side of the site. See Map 1. A single sample kit (four bottles) was completed
with groundwater from each piezometer. A third water sample was taken from a ground water
seep west of the piezometers, at the base of a backfilled area. All of these ground water sample
sites can be seen on Map 1. These water samples were dropped off at ACZ Laboratories on
February 2, 2012 for testing, by Ben Langenfeld, who had sole chain of custody of the samples.
Samples of the backfill were taken at each of the drill sites marked on Map 1, with the exception
of site #6. Two attempts to drill in this area only encountered gravel, and as such the area was
abandoned for sampling of backfill. The samples identification numbers correlate with Map 1.
The table below lists each point of either a groundwater sample, backfill sample, or attempted
auger hole. Each of these points can be seen on Map 1, and were located with a Garmin GPS
(accuracy of about 3 feet). The backfill samples taken can be coordinated with a GPS waypoint
(WP -##) marked on the sample bag and the map.
Based on the sample locations, visual inspection of the sample material, and Steve Baker's
information on what backfill areas might have the most coal waste present, it was agreed that
samples WP -61, 65, and 67 should have SPLP tests conducted on them. All of the auger samples
were brought back to GLA offices on February 3, 2012, visually inspected, and the SPLP
samples confirmed. The samples will be sent to ACZ for testing once DRMS concurs with the
contents of this memo.
