This topsoil salvage <br />depth figure accounts for inclusions and topsoil Toss during salvage due to brush clearing. Topsoil salvage within <br />this map unit will onl be conducted if the salvaged topsoil is suitable, the rock fragment content is less than 35 <br />percent, and equipment can be operated safely. <br />5703-Starman Fine Sandy Loam. This map unit occurs on steep to very steep sideslopes, toeslopes, and ridges. <br />Starman soils have a thin light colored surface horizon which directly overlie skeletal substratum. Adjacent soils <br />are moderately deep (Roxal Variantl, have a dark colored surface horizon, subsurface clay accumulation, and a <br />skeletal substratum ILymansonl, or have an argillic horizon ILithic Cryoboralfsl. <br />The S703 map unit consists of 80 percent Starman with 8 percent Roxal variant, 7 percent Lymanson, and 5 <br />percent Lithic Cryoboralf inclusions (Appendix 9-2, Table 11. A 6-inch mean salvage depth was used for this map <br />unit to calculate recoverable topsoil volumes listed in Table 21-1 and Exhibit 9-1. This topsoil salvage depth figure <br />accounts for inclusions and topsoil loss during salvage due to brush clearing. Topsoil salvage within this map unit <br />will onl be conducted if significant contamination by rock fragments can be avoided and equipment can be <br />operated safely. <br />DL-Disturbed Land (roads, oil well pad, pond embankment, or borrow areal. This map unit is located in areas <br />where prior construction has destroyed, covered, or contaminated the topsoil resource. These areas, including the <br />access road, erection pad, oil well pad, and Twentymile Road, were all disturbed prior to 1976. No suitable topsoil <br />is available from this unit (Table 21-1 and Exhibits 9-1 and 9-21. <br />W-Water. This map unit consists of man-made and beaver pond areas that existed when the baseline soil surveys <br />were completed. No suitable topsoil is available from this unit (Table 21-1 and Exhibits 9-1 and 9-21 <br />Topsoil Salvage Techniques. Before any area at the mine site other than a proposed topsoil stockpile site is <br />significantly disturbed, the suitable topsoil material will be removed to the depth specified in Tables 21-1, and 21- <br />2, and Exhibits 9-1, 9-2 and 9-3.
