Evaluation of Soils for Reclamation Potential. The soils and parent materials on the study area
were rated for suitability based on criteria presented in Table 9-2, Criteria for Evaluating Soil
Suitability. Recommended topsoil salvage depths were generated for each sampled pedon and
each component of a mapping unit. Salvage depths were determined following a detailed
evaluation of pH, conductivity, saturation percent, soil texture, sodium adsorption ratio,
calcium carbonate percent, acid base potential, and rock fragment percent.
Chemical constituents including boron, copper, zinc, molybdenum, and selenium were also
evaluated. Secondary suitability criteria, including depth to bedrock, depth to ground water,
consistence, organic matter content, and slope steepness were also utilized to determine
topsoil salvage depths.
Topsoil salvage depths were based on average depths to the suspect parameter or average
profile depths lif the entire profile was suitable) across the entire study area based on
numerous soil profile descriptions obtained for each soil type.
Results/Discussion
Soil Survey Maps. The distribution of each map unit on the Seneca II-W/II-W South study area
is provided on 1:4800 11" = 400') scale topographic base maps (dated 7/11/71 for the tie
across haul road corridor, 7/1/89 for II-W, and 1998 for the II-W South Extension Areal
accompanying this report. The maps are presented as Exhibit 9-1, Sheets 1 oT 2 and 2 of 2;
Exhibit 9-2; and Exhibit 9-3. Map unit, soil survey and permit boundaries, soil description
locations, topsoil depth verification sites, and soil sample/description locations for the study
area are also shown on the base maps.
Fifty-nine typifying soil pedons (soil profile description and sample locations), 36 topsoil depth
verification sites, and 131 soil profile description sites, are denoted on Exhibits 9-1, 9-2, and
9-3. The legend on the maps includes all map unit symbols, map unit names, and
recommended soil salvage depths for all map units which occur in the projected disturbance
area. Soil sample locations for each separate field survey are provided in Appendix 9-1 .
Soil Horizon Nomenclature. Revised soil series profile descriptions were available from NRCS
for all soil series and soil series variants mapped on the study area. These revised descriptions
incorporated the new soil horizon nomenclature. This nomenclature was used to revise soil
profile descriptions completed during previous surveys and used during the SCC 1990 soil
survey.
11
U
15 Revised 9/98
