occurs in the incised drainage areas. The disturbed riparian type occurs along Sage Creek in
the east end of the haul road corridor.
Methodology
Tasks performed to accomplish project objectives included:
0 Review of existing soil information
Detailed field mapping of soils in (Order 1) and outside (Order 2) the disturbance
area, but within the permit area
Reconnaissance mapping of soils (Order 3) located outside of the permit area, but
within the Pond 009 watershed
Soil sampling and profile description of all dominant soils within the projected
disturbance area
® Evaluation of soils for reclamation potential
0 Interpretation of soil properties to determine hydrologic characteristics
The methodology used during the soil survey followed standard techniques and procedures of
the National Cooperative Soil Survey as outlined in SCS (1975), SCS (1980), SCS (1981),
SCS (1982), Fosberg and Palen (1983), USDA-SCS (1971), and Soil Survey Staff (1996).
The design of the survey was based on DMG rules 2.04.9, 2.04.12, and 2.06.6, statute [34-
33- 110(2)(q) CSCMRA], and consultation, as well as SCC soil survey specifications. The
initial soil survey program (1979) was reviewed for completeness and technical adequacy on
January 14 and 17, 1983 by Mr. Jim Herron, DMG reclamation specialist and lead person
(during 1982-1984) responsible for review of the soil survey baseline study. Mr. Herron's
concerns were addressed by selecting 51 topsoil depth verification sample sites,%krithin the
Seneca 11-W disturbance area during the 1983 and 1984 surveys to evaluate and confirm or
revise the topsoil resource information previously collected in 1979. Similar procedures
were used again in April/May 1989 along the tie-across haul road corridor. Soil survey
procedures for the 1990 mine expansion area were identical to those approved on July 25,
1989 by Carl Mount, DMG reclamation specialist, for Peabody's 1989 baseline soil survey
for the Yoast area.
PR-06 6 Revised 07/11
