In
anticipation of this, Peabody contracted with Metcalf
Archaeological Consultants, Inc. (MAC), to conduct
archaeological clearance activities in proposed permit
expansion areas that had not been previously surveyed.
Current and past survey areas, the proposed permit boundary,
and archaeological sites and isolated finds are shown on
Exhibit 5-1 (enclosed).
Mac's report is enclosed for your review. The survey of
the proposed expansion areas resulted in the
substantiation of previously recorded site 5RT118, and the
identification of one isolated find (site 5RT709). Site
5RT118 was originally recorded in 1979, and consisted of
three anthropomorphic rock art figures. Not recorded in
1979 was a scaiter of fire-cracked rock and potential hearth
areas below the rock art panel. In MAC's opinion, site
5RT118 is significant. They further recommend testing and
documentation should the area be impacted by mining or
associated activities.
