The first and
foremost consideration is there would be no additional discharge of pollutants to surface waters of the
state caused by the activity. Based on current permitting procedures it is the understanding of the WQCD
that groundwater issues from the mine are to be addressed by the Division of Reclamation Mining &
Safety (DRMS).
The other considerations the WQCD has are in order to insure water quality remains the same, or
improves, and that any work in the mine is limited to structural shoring and exploratory coring work within
the current mine. No actual mining, ore production, extension of any of the current workings, or
significant surface disturbance would be allowed without an effective CDPS individual industrial discharge
permit and /or industrial stormwater permit.
It is the WQCDs understanding from communications with DRMS that water quality monitoring will be
required by DRMS to insure no worseninlc of water quality will occur. It is also the WQCDs understanding
that the coring work will be limited only to NX core size (2 -7/8 inch diameter) with the coring machinery
utilizing existing tunnels, and any core holes that leak after drilling will be filled and /or grouted closed to
prevent any further water from leaking from the core hole.
With these considerations in place the WQCD will allow the exploratory coring to occur without needing a
CDPS discharge permit. Please contact me with any questions you have about this.
.I0A I
STATE C2OMD
Eric T.
