The Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety has completed review of the 2010 Annual Hydrology
Report (AHR) for the Southfield Mine. Please review our questions or comments, if any, (highlighted
in bold text) and respond, if necessary, within 30 days.
Monitoring Frequency — Surface Water (Creeks)
Exhibit 25 of the approved permit application details the hydrologic monitoring frequency for surface
and ground water at the site. Magpie Creek, Newlin Creek, and Second Alkali Creek are monitored at
the reclaimed mine site. Oak Creek was historically monitored at the reclaimed coal loadout; however
Technical Revision Number 36 terminated this practice.
The required frequency is semi - annual visits with samples taken semi - annually if flow is present.
Visits were made to all required sites in April and December during 2010. Flow was recorded and
sampled during the April visit at the upstream and downstream sites on Newlin Creek. No other
surface flow was recorded at any of the other sites during the two visits in 2010.
Water samples were not tested for all of the constituents as required by Exhibit 25, part I (C)(5.)
As the 2010 AHR indicates (page 16), data for Newlin Creek is missing for Calcium, Magnesium,
Manganese, Sodium, and Iron. Please insure that this oversight does not occur in the future.
Monitoring Frequency — Sedimentation Pond Discharges
Four sediment ponds remain on site (two at the mine site and two at the loadout) to treat surface runoff
from the reclaimed areas; these four ponds are also listed in the CDPS permit. No discharge was
recorded during 2010 from any of these ponds. This is consistent with Division inspections in 2010.
