Mr. Michael Cunningham
tr
Environmental Protection Specialist
Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, Colorado 80203
Re: CEMEX Lyons Mine Permit M -1977 -208
7 Technical Revision No. 11, C -Pit Hydrogeologic Investigations
1, 4 Quarter 2011 Monitoring Data
Dear Mr. Cunningham:
This letter transmits surface water and groundwater data associated with the sampling of cement
kiln dust disposal area (C -Pit) ponded water and related wells for the fourth quarter of 2011. For
your convenience, data from the last four quarters are also included in Table 1 as an attachment.
On December 19, 2011, CEMEX personnel sampled the water in CEM -001 and CEM -004 wells,
and the ponded water at the north east end of C -Pit.
The C -Pit ponded water and well groundwater samples taken were analyzed for pH, chloride,
sulfate, dissolved solids, dissolved selenium and dissolved thallium (Table 1). The samples were
analyzed for pH at the time of collection; this value is reported instead of the laboratory value
due to hold time changes that occur in pH values. The samples had no exceedances of the
standards.
C -pit water pH has increased to 11.7. The sample was collected from the edge of the pond so ice
had to be broken in order to collect the sample. CEMEX plans to take additional samples from
the center of the pond at depth in order to limit the potential influence from wind -blown cement
kiln dust (CKD) on pH. Results of these pH samples will be forwarded in the first quarter 2012
report. For the safety of water fowl, streamers /flagging is still installed across the open water to
discourage birds from landing on the C -Pit pond.
If there are any questions regarding the above information or the attachments, please contact me
at (303) 823 -2115.
Sincerely,
Denise Arthur, D.
Environmental Manager
5134 Ute Hwy PO Box 529
Lyon, CO 80540
Encls.\ Summary of Analytical Results (Table)
January 11, 2012
Via Certified Mail
Return Receipt Requested
7007 2680 0001 6365 9141
RECEIVED
NN 13ZO12
Division of Reclamation,
Mining & Safety
