with 20.6 and 18.1 percent respectively. Also observed in the area were the noxious <br />weeds hound's tongue and Canada thistle. <br />Total average vegetation cover for all hits was 117.7 percent. For herbaceous vegetation, <br />total average cover for all hits was 40.5 percent. Cover by standing dead, litter, bare soil <br />and rock averaged 0.4, 12.5, 4.7 and 0.1 percent respectively. Average species density <br />was 32.6 species per 100 sq. m. <br />Sagebrush / Snowberry Reference Area <br />(Photographs 14 through 16) <br />COVER <br />(Table 4) <br />Native shrubs were the predominant lifeform observed in the Sagebrush/Snowberry <br />Reference Area, contributing 30.9 percent all -hit vegetation cover. Of this total, mountain <br />snowberry contributed 17.5 percent and big sagebrush (Seriphidium tridentatum) <br />contributed 13.0 percent. Native perennial fortis and native perennial cool season grasses <br />made moderate contributions to cover, with 20.2 and 12.6 percent respectively. Also <br />observed in the area was the noxious weed hound's tongue. <br />Total average vegetation cover for all hits was 66.7 percent. For herbaceous vegetation, <br />total average cover for all hits was 35.8 percent. Cover by standing dead, litter, bare soil <br />and rock averaged 2.5, 28.9, 6.4 and 0.1 percent respectively. Average species density <br />was 20.5 species per 100sq. m. <br />Steep Mountain Brush Reference Area <br />(Photographs 17 through 23) <br />COVER <br />(Table 5) <br />Native shrubs were the predominant lifeform observed in the Steep Mountain Brush <br />Reference Area, contributing 26.1 percent all -hit vegetation cover. Native shrubs were <br />predominantly composed of big sagebrush, Gambel's oak, birchleaf mountain mahogany <br />(Cercocarpus montanus), and Saskatoon serviceberry. Native perennial cool season <br />grasses made moderate contributions to cover with 12.2 percent. Also observed in the <br />area was the noxious weed hound's tongue. <br />12 <br />
