Overburden was fragmented with explosives. Bulldozers prepared benches to allow for
drilling with a rotary drill. Drill holes were loaded with ANFO (ammonium nitrate - fuel oil)
or other approved blasting agents. Fragmented overburden was removed by dragline and
spoiled into the previous pit.
Coal was fragmented (primarily through the use of explosives) and removed from the pit.
Hydraulic shovels loaded haul trucks which transported raw coal from the pit directly to the
Hayden Station generation plant over county and private roadways by a private hauler. Direct
haul to the plant precluded coal preparation at the mine site.
Cast over spoils were graded to approximate original contour, and salvaged topsoil was
redistributed. Topsoil replacement depth is approximately one foot. Areas of topsoil
redistribution were generally drill seeded the first fall planting season following completion of
topsoil spreading.
Reclamation of pit areas was concurrent with mining. All final pit highwalls were reduced
and the entire disturbed area regraded. Topsoil was replaced and vegetation was reestablished.
Water usage at the site is limited to dust suppression and maintenance, Water used in
maintenance and dust suppression activities is withdrawn from Pond 008. Seneca Coal
Company has secured water rights for all water usage and for replacement in the event that
off -site water supplies are damaged or depleted.
Operations at the permitted mining area will involve maintenance and limited reclamation
activities only during the remainder of the permit term.
7
