Seismic Survey
A seismic survey will be conducted on what was once known as New Horizon 1 to the north of the
current mine. This area is also known as the Rice Tract or the Garvey Tract. The goal of this
program will be to determine the location of the highwall of the reclaimed Peabody Nucla Mine.
The information gathered from this survey will assist in mine planning for the New Horizon North
Mine permit, currently under DRMS review.
The seismic survey will consist of six seismic exploration lines across and perpendicular to the
suspected highwall (See Figure 1). Each line will be approximately 300 feet in length and will
ideally have a spacing interval of 13 feet between geophones. The seismic source for the program
will be located at the surface and will be a hammer plate (sledgehammer on a steel plate). Data
will be collected by computer and analyzed to determine the location of the highwall. Figure 2 is
a cross - section of the expected orientation of the highwall.
Disturbance caused by the survey will be minimal to none. Most travel across the site will be by
foot, but pickup truck access will be required to move material to the site. Work will be performed
when the ground is dry to minimize impact. No reseeding or other reclamation will be necessary.
Revised Decemeber 2010 Attachment 2.05.3(3) -23 -1
