DIVISION OF RECLAMATION, MINING AND SAFETY
Department of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman St., Room 215
Denver, Colorado 80203
Phone: (303) 866 -3567
FAX: (303) 832 -8106
December 14, 2011
Alan D. Cox
Homestake Mining Company
PO Box 98
Grants, NM 87020
Re: Pitch Project, Permit M- 1977 -004, Indian Creek Replacement Piezometer Report.
Dear Mr. Cox,
Thank you for the report detailing the installation of the two replacement piezometers at the Pitch Project.
Homestake has been monitoring and reporting groundwater data from a series of piezometers at the site,
and will continue to do so during coming years. With the failure of two of the wells, specifically IC-
10300 and IC- 10370, it was clear that two new wells would be necessary.
The report includes all the information needed to describe the successful installation of the two
replacement wells, and the permanent closure of the two failed wells. It is interesting that replacement
piezometer number IC- 10370R encountered such a significant depth of voids in the boulders at or near the
bottom of the waste rock fill. However, since groundwater was detected in the well and the correct
segment of the column was screened, this office accepts the current well installation.
Please continue to include the past data from the piezometers that are now closed, in the reports that
Homestake provides annually, as well as data from the new wells. If you have any questions I may be
reached at the Division's Durango Field Office: 691 CR 233, Room A -2, Durango, CO 81301; telephone
970 - 247 -5193.
Have a good holiday season.
Sincerely, Oivvi/Vit
Bob Oswald
Environmental Protection Specialist
Ec: Steve Shuey, DRMS Grand Junction
USFS, 216 N.
