water balance will be recorded as frequently
q tly as necessary in order
to update the disposal area mass and water balance. This information
will include precipitation, evaporation, }
P pumping rates and hours,.
tailings level , water pond volumes, seepage volumes, and slurry
densities. In addition, bi-annual surveys of the embankment
configuration and disposal area to evaluate incremental and total
volumes of deposited tailings will be performed.
A rain gauge and evaporation pan will be installed and
maintained in order to monitor the volumes of precipitation and
evaporation. This information, combined with a mass and water
balance simulation update, will be used in modifying the tailings
disposal area operation to suit natural and operating conditions.
2.4 Hydrolooic System
The objectives of this monitoring
program are to identify any
changes in the quantity and quality of surface water and groundwater
during the life of the San Luis Project. The monitoring process will
involve four separate aspects: 1) groundwater levels, 2)
groundwater quality, 3) surface water quantity, and 4) surface
water quality.
Knowledge of changes in the hydrologic environment, together
with baseline data already available, will permit evaluation of the
hydrologic impacts of the mining operation.
2.4.1 Groundwater
Groundwater will be monitored at the locations of monitor
wells shown on Figure G-1 of the amendment application. Seven
wells have been established at various levels in the area of
the tailings disposal area. All but one of these wells are
currently dry. An additional number of wells have been
1
71 01 324
