STATE OF COLORADO ROY ROMER, Governor Geological Survey
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES Board of Land Commissioners
Mined Land Reclamation
Ken Salazar, Executive Director Division of Mines
1313 Sherman St.,Room 718,Denver,Colorado 80203 866 33311 Oil and Gas Conservation Commission
Division of Parks& Outdoor Recreation
Soil Conservation Board
Water Conservation Board
Division of Water Resources
i Division of Wildlife
1
M E M O R A N D U M 1 -2,
TO: Mike Long, Director, MLRD
G
FROM: Ken Salazar, Executive Director
SUBJECT: Battle Mountain Gold Company
DATE: April 6, 1992
In our conversations during the past week, we agreed that the
activities of the Mined Land Reclamation Division in connection
with the cyanide levels of the Battle Mountain Gold Company mine
would have, as our highest priority, health and human safety,
wildlife protection, and assuring environmental protection. To
that end, I thank you for your efforts and those of your staff as
you have worked non-stop on this problem during the last week.
As I have said before, I am concerned about Battle Mountain Gold
Company' s knowledge of and failure to report the high cyanide
levels in the pond over the last several months. If indeed Battle
Mountain Gold Company officials were aware of the cyanide problem
since November, and failed to report that information to state and
local authorities, I believe that behavior on the part of Battle
Mountain Gold Company would have been inappropriate, and perhaps
illegal. I therefore am requesting that the Mined Land Reclamation
Division conduct a comprehensive inquiry and report back to me on
(1) the source of the problem for the high levels of cyanide in the
tailings pond at the Battle Mountain Gold Company site; and (2) a
report on when and what information became available to Battle
Mountain Gold Company, and any explanation on the part of Battle
Mountain Gold Company on why there was a delay in reporting that
information to appropriate state officials.
Thank you for your help.
