The proposed lease area falls within the ColoWyo
Common Allotment. There are 173 animal unit months (AUM) of forage available for
sheep use from June lst through October 31 There are 347 AUMs of forage available
for cattle from May 1 through October 31 Grazing management must adhere to BLM's
Standards for Public Land Health and Guidelines for Livestock Grazing Management' in
Colorado (BLM 1995). Wildlife habitat is discussed in Section 3.8
3.11 Cultural Resources
The Yampa and Williams Fork River area was occupied by a succession of prehistoric
cultures beginning about 11,000 years before present and continuing until historic contact
with Ute and other Native American tribes (Reed and Metcalf 1999, Husband 1984).
Prior to about 8,000 years before present, this area of North America was occupied by
people adapted to the hunting of large game animals such as ancient forms of bison. The
Colorado Mountains and plateaus were used seasonally by these cultures, but current
evidence shows that this use was not intensive. During the interval between about 7,000
years and 5,000 years before present, a combination of factors brought about the end of
the highly nomadic big game hunting tradition, and prehistoric cultures turned to a
broader base of foodstuffs by focusing on the diverse resources found within more
localized territories, a life style termed by archaeologists as the Archaic. The Archaic
Period, as it is known, lasted from over 8,000 years before present to perhaps 1,500 years
before present.
During certain periods, such as a warm interval that culminated about 6,000 before
P..PP.WF-CT Culow■u.61814 EA FinnI HL \I - -E.\ Coll.•m 08 2)1
38
