OBSERVATIONS
PERMIT #: M- 2005 -039
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: SJR
INSPECTION DATE: November 21, 2011
This was a normal monitoring inspection of the Ridley Pit; DRMS File No. M- 2005 -039, operated by Bent
County. This site is located 14 miles southeast of Las Animas, Colorado, Colorado in Bent County. I, Stephanie
Reigh of the Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety conducted the inspection. Mr. Robert
Darnell of Bent County accompanied me on the inspection.
This is a 112c mining operation with a 93.18 acre permit area. The Operator began the operation on the east
side of the site and has excavated to the west. The site is currently on the west side of the road. The
previously disturbed area to the east have been reclaimed and have adequate vegetation cover, namely blue
grama and buffalo grass. The pit is approximately 10 feet deep with 3:1 horizontal to vertical ratio side slopes
or flatter. The Operator pushes the material from the perimeter of the site to the center of the site. By doing
this they create gentle pit slopes instead of vertical highwalls. The mined material is piled at the center of the
site for stockpiling. Topsoil has been stripped in advance of the mining operation and is stockpiled along the
perimeter of the pit. The total affected land was measured to be approximately 9.91 acres. The current
affected land is marked by tires for permit boundary markers. The NW boundary marker was moved by the
adjacent landowner for fence installation. Robert Darnell will replace the tire and send a picture of the
replaced boundary marker.
All other activities and completed work at the time of inspection appeared to follow the guidelines and
regulations set forth by the state and in the mining and reclamation plans for the pit.
