OBSERVATIONS
PERMIT #: M- 2007 -005
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: THM
INSPECTION DATE: October 28, 2011
This inspection was conducted as part of the normal monitoring program established by the Colorado Division
of Reclamation, Mining and Safety (DRMS). The Riverside Parkway Pit is located approximately 1 mile south
of Grand Junction, Colorado southwest of Highway 50. The site is a 111c operation. Paul Jagim of the City of
Grand Junction accompanied the inspector during the inspection.
The site is inactive and most of the required reclamation has been completed at the site. All reclaimed slopes
appeared to be no steeper than the required 3H:1 V. The only reclamation component that must occur is the
establishment of adequate vegetation which may require one to two more growing seasons. Only a few areas
observed had adequate perennial grasses established. Many areas are bare with no vegetation and some areas
have annual weeds growing on them. Division staff recommends that the operator collect a composite soil
sample to determine if the soil conditions are the reason for the lack of vegetation. Based on the soil sample
results the operator may need to comprise an appropriate seed mix and submit a technical revision to
incorporate the revised seed mix into the reclamation plan.
The operator should be sure to stay on top of the weed control efforts in order to insure that the tamarisk
observed on the east side of the permit area does not get established and push out desirable vegetation at the
site.
A few piles of trash were observed within the permit area. The operator stated that he plans to restrict access to
the site to unauthorized individuals by implementing a locked gate. Also, a compost stockpile was observed
within the permit area. A technical revision to include this area as a stockpile location for compost must be
filed in order for the stockpile location to be included in the final reclamation plan.
No problems or possible violations were observed during the inspection.
Responses to this inspection report should be directed to Travis Marshall at the Division of Reclamation,
Mining and Safety, Grand Junction Field Office, 101 South 3 Street, Room 301, Grand Junction, Colorado
81501, phone no. 970 - 241 -2042.
