le conversation started
around the same time as
f arm markets, when people
sometimes complained about
the high cost of food. This Friday
the conversation about food cost
continues with some answers
and more questions with the
presentation of the San Miguel
Watershed Community Food
Assessment Survey.
At The New Community
Coalition's (TNCC) Green
Business Roundtable on Friday,
the survey results will be pre-
sented by Bodie and llsa
Johansson, who conducted and
compiled the survey with help
from a Paradox Strengthening
Communities Fund grant.
The survey focused on several
elements of food in the commu-
nity, from where people in the
San Miguel Watershed get their
food to how much they pay for it,
who the local producers are and
how much they do and can pro-
duce, and how much money they
can realistically make on what
they grow and sell.
Colleen Trout of TNCC. Another
issue that arises is the cost of
buying local food, and the true
costs of buying any food.
"We're really excited to have
this conversation," said Trout. "If
you ever grow food, you know
how much time and effort it
takes, and people don't really
think about the true cost of kiwi
front New Zealand, or mangoes
from Chile. Those foods travel a
lot of miles and have a huge car-
bon footprint."
