October 19, 2011 C- 1981 - 010 /Trapper Mine RDZ
Twelve ponds were inspected: East Pyeatt #1, 42, 43; Middle Pyeatt #3; West Pyeatt #1, 42; Johnson #6, #10; No
Name 42, #5; Far East Buzzard, and Coyote.
The following ponds were discharging: Johnson 46 and #1OF, No Name 42 and 45R East Pyeatt 42, and Coyote
(very small seepage out of primary spillway). The water in all discharges was clear and free of odor.
East Pyeatt Pond # 1 has had sediment removed, and banks have been seeded. The spring(s) that feeds this pond is
flowing at a significant rate, but the pond is not discharging because of the recent cleaning. An island was left in
the middle of the pond due to access limitations. This will serve as a baffle and increase residence time of runoff.
Per Billy Nicholson, this pond will be surveyed soon to check remaining capacity.
East Pyeatt Pond 43 should also be surveyed for capacity in the near future.
A fence has been constructed around No Name Pond 42.
No serious problems were identified with any of the ponds. The following maintenance item was identified during
the inspection: East Pyeatt 42 requires cleaning above the spillway.
The inspection revealed that the following culverts have been cleaned: AE 10, SA I, and the culvert where No
Name Gulch crosses the Old BC Road. Culvert GRS2 still needs to be cleaned.
Repair of the channel in Middle Flume (near the electrical substation) was complete. Check dams were
constructed in the channel. The banks are not armored and will require monitoring for erosion. Per Billy
Nicholson, they will be seeded this fall. Erosion in a tributary to Middle Flume has also been repaired and
armored.
The channel that drains the Industrial Waste Pond was observed near No Name Gulch. No pollutants were
observed or other problems identified.
GENERAL MINE PLAN COMPLANCE:
The mine was found to be in general compliance with the permit.
The following mining activities were observed:
• In F Pit, coal is no longer being mined. Three scrapers were laying down topsoil and grading a
reclamation area.
ZD11.
The Queen Ann and Baby Doe draglines were idle in the Z Dip pit.
A truck was hauling coal from the Z Dip Pit. Per Billy Nicholson, this coal came from the Q seam, cut
In the K Strike Pit, the Molly Brown dragline was casting interburden.
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 6
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 1
Page 3 of 10
