<br />On behalf of Holcim (US) Inc., Golder is pleased to submit information requested by the Colorado Division
<br />or Reclamation and Mining Safety (DRMS) regarding further characterization of the aquifer and current
<br />uses of groundwater near the Boettcher Limestone Quarry. In the January 24, 2011 letter to Holcim, four
<br />requests for additional information were made by the DRMS; each request is addressed in turn below.
<br />1. "Please determine if this site is located in a classified or unclassified groundwater area. This
<br />may have a significant impact on the groundwater standards that would be applied to the
<br />site."
<br />The Colorado Ground Water Commission has established 8 designated basins and 13 ground water
<br />management districts within Colorado. The Boettcher Limestone Quarry is not located in any of the
<br />basins or management districts classified by the Colorado Ground Water Commission.
<br />2. "What are the uses of the aquifer in the surrounding area ?"
<br />Groundwater wells in the surrounding area are primarily permitted for domestic use. Other uses
<br />noted on the permit applications are commercial, geothermal, household, irrigation, and stock. Also,
<br />it appears that the wells are not all completed in the same aquifer based on the reported completion
<br />intervals, thus the use may be somewhat dependent upon which aquifer is screened and quality of
<br />the water available. Further details regarding the water wells are presented in the response to
<br />request 3, below.
<br />3. "Are there any permitted wells within 1/2 mile of the site? In particular, drinking water or
<br />irrigation wells. If so, these wells should be plotted on a map of the area which also shows the
<br />permit boundary, CKD disposal areas and measured groundwater flow direction."
<br />A search for nearby wells was conducted using the Colorado Division of Water Resources (DWR)
<br />online database on May 9, 2011, and included Township 8N, Range 69W, Sixth PM, Sections 4, 5, 6,
<br />7, 8, 9, 10, 15, 16, 17, 18, 20, and 21. This search identified a total of 146 permit applications in this
<br />area. According to DWR staff, this does not mean there are 146 wells because some wells have
<br />been abandoned and others were never installed for various reasons. While not conclusive,
<br />information regarding whether a well exists can be located in the "status" section of the database
<br />records.
<br />Using the permit application status information, Golder determined that 76 wells potentially exist
<br />within 1 /2 mile of the property boundary. Of these, approximately 15 wells are within 'h mile of the
<br />CKD disposal area. These 76 potential wells are shown on Figure 1 along with:
