' SDGTI~1 VI
F~DLTATIONS ADID CONiRIBLIfION P(7PIIIPTAT S
The test excavation program at SDT271 served to not only test the
' site, but to thoroughly examine three mall ephemeral archaeological
components. Because of their size, the simple act of opening them up
for scrutiny resulted in their near total excavation. This was
acaxcpli.shed within the planned three percent site examination agreed to
by the SIM and Colorado Westmoreland.
The excavations are seemingly the first professional excavation
' effort in the North Fork Valley. Additionally, they are among the first
substantive examinations of shall ephemeral oaiponents in western
Colorado. Such ocmponents are frequently subjected to shovel testing
' but are seldom found to be very informative. The program at SDT271 will
provide solid dates for a limited range of material culture in short
term aboriginal carps. In this regard, the project will contribute
' solid data useful in chronology building and iri functional analysis of
site types. The project is also one of the few to examine historic Ute
sites in the area. Lrg~ortant paleo-environmental data and information
on subsistelice technologies will be fortheani.ng. It is anticipated that
a journal article(s) as well as publishable technical report will result
from this project.
•
J
7
1 •
1 21
