18089). This date places the occupation in the early Forrttntive Period
~. of ca. A.D. 500 - A.D. 1200. The occupation is clearly an ephemeral
one, perhaps a seasonal hunting cane. The only material cultural
besides flakes and flake tools, was a small corner notched projectile
point and two small wid blades or preforms. The feature area was about
5 x 5 meters square and was approximately 75 percent excavated. It's
National Register eligibility has been irt~aired as a by-product of the
excavation program but it could still be eligible because there may be
more of a ax~onent involved. Outlying test excavations indicate the
site extends further east in an area which was not excavated. Also,
there is an even lacer terrace which was not tested. The project
sponsor asked the excavations not be expended beyond the knaan feature
areas.
While SdP271 was probably once a National Register eligible
resource, its eligibility has been diminished as part of the
archaeological effort. This is due to the small fragile nature of its
ang~onents. IIwugh questions remain, however, to suggest that its
Register eligiblity should be reconsidered in the event the resource is
ever threatened. As the nearby portal development is now understood,
havever, SI7I271 is neither within the area of undertaking nor will be
iu~actsd by it. The resource would not seem to warrent futtller
1 consideration in relation to Colorado Westrroreland's current plans.
•
1

1
•
' 19
