Mr. Andrew Newhart
Water Quality Control Division
WQCD -PE -B2
4300 Cherry Creek Drive South
Denver, CO 80246 -1530
RE: Bear Coal Company
CDPS Permit No. CO- 0044377
Gunnison County
Dear Mr. Newhart:
The Division has been notified that Bear Coal Company (Bear) filed notice of dissolution papers with
the State. The Division of Reclamation Mining and Safety would like Bear to clean up a few issues at
the mine site before Bear no longer exists. The main issue is the spring water and the water
treatment pond.
Please give Bear approval to pipe the spring water directly to the North Fork of the Gunnison River.
After the spring water is pipe to the river, the treatment pond can be reclaimed.
Bear monitors the quality of water emitted from the spring as well as the water that is discharged
from the treatment pond. Attached are some water quality data from the spring that shows one year
of discharge permit compliance. The spring is referred to as the "hillside in the lab reports.
Your prompt review and approval of this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Any questions please let me know.
Sincerely,
4/0
Daniel E.
