used salt brine will be discharged into the 7 acre double-lined wastewater
evaporation pond for volume reduction by solar evaporation. The discharge is
discussed further in Section D-7.2 Wastewater Discharges.
B. BOILER WATER TREATMENT
Proper management of boiler water purity is required to control steam purity, scale
deposits and corrosion for optimum efficiency of the boiler system. All or some of the
chemicals discussed below will be used in the various parts of the boiler. All of the
reaction products and unreacted residuals of the chemicals added to the boiler
system will discharge by continuous or intermittent blowdown into the wastewater
pond as discussed in Section 7.2 Wastewater Discharges.
The boiler water treatment chemicals will be used for:
• boiler makeup water quality control;
• dissolved oxygen corrosion control;
• pH correction; and
• scale control.
The treatments for each of these are as follows:
Makeup Water
A continuous blowdown of water from the boiler will be required to maintain boiler
efficiency by eliminating excess impurities that build up in the circulating boiler water.
The amount of blowdown is directly related to the quality of makeup water fed to the
system. Makeup water will be purified by treating softened plant water by reverse
osmosis (RO). RO is a process for removing dissolved solids from water by forcing
water under applied pressure through a semipermeable membrane, which will
transmit the water but reject most dissolved materials. This process produces a
concentrated brine of the dissolved solids impurities that will be discharged into the
double-lined 7 acre wastewater pond for volume reduction by solar evaporation.
Depending upon the quality of the softened water that will be used as feed to the RO
unit, sulfuric acid and sodium hexametaphosphate may be required to pretreat the
water ahead of the RO unit to prevent fouling and subsequent blocking of the unit
G:\LMW\78545.002\Reclamation\Reclamexh.DOC D-43
