Box 1181 <br /> Meeker, CO 81641 <br /> The current land uses of the project site and adjacent properties are as follows: <br /> • livestock grazing — the proposed project is located on an allotment which contains <br /> approximately 64,050 acres of public land which provides forage for cattle during the <br /> period from May 1 to December 15 each year. <br /> • wild horses—wild horses use the project area on an intermittent basis, and the area <br /> is within the Piceance/East Douglas Wild Horse Herd Management Area. <br /> • mule deer— the project area and Piceance Basin have historically supported one of <br /> the largest migratory mule deer herds in North American. In the winter the deer <br /> concentrate in pinyon-juniper and sagebrush areas below 7,400 feet, where snow <br /> depth and temperatures are more moderate. <br /> • elk — during the winter months elk use the lower elevation areas of pinyon juniper <br /> ranges of the Piceance Basin including the sodium lease tracts; the area is not <br /> considered critical elk habitat. <br /> • recreation—the project area is located within a semi-primitive — motorized recreation <br /> opportunity area and managed as part of the BLM White River Extensive Recreation <br /> Management Area; the dominant recreational activity is big game hunting/ secondary <br /> recreational activities include camping, off-road vehicle use, picnicking, wood <br /> gathering and nature study. <br /> • mining activities — American Soda, L.L.P. has a nahcolite pilot production facility <br /> approximately 6 2/3 miles east of the project site and is in the planning stages for a <br /> G:\LMW 78545.002\Reclamation\Reciamexh.DOC D-2 <br />
