MOUNTAIN COAL
' COMPANY L.L.C.
A Subsidiary of Arch Western Bituminous Group. LLC
October 19, 2011
Mr. Dan Hemandez
Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety
Office of Mined Land Reclamation
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, Colorado 80203
OCT - I 9 2011
reclamation,
Mining and Safety
Re: Mountain Coal Company, LLC, West Elk Mine; Permit No. C- 1980 -007; Minor
Revision No. MR -382, Addition of MDW E3 -61 and MDW E3 -64
Dear Mr. Hemandez:
Mountain Coal Company, LLC (MCC) submits this letter, application form and revised Exhibit 80
table of contents for Minor Revision No. MR -382 to drill two new vertical methane drainage wells
from existing MDW pads. MCC is still experiencing difficulty in venting the necessary volumes of
methane from the mine. These two MDWs will aid in ensuring better ventilation as the longwall
face advances.
As marked in orange on the attached drawing, new MDW E3 -64 will be drilled from the newest pad
where MDW E3 -65 was recently drilled and MDW E3 -61 will be drilled from the existing MDW E3-
63 pad to the west. The planned total depth of MDW E3 -61 is 950' and for E3 -64 is 970', both
completed with 7" steel casing.
I have already spoken with Ryan Taylor of the Forest Service's (FS) Paonia Ranger District office to
alert him of this important project and he is prepared to act on it as soon as the application is
deemed complete by the Division. We would like to begin drilling these new wells as soon as
possible, so your swift consideration of this application would be appreciated. Please contact me at
(970) 929 -2238 or by e-mail should you have questions regarding this submittal.
Sincerely,
Kathleen G.
