The Greeley West Pit, File No. M- 1977 -081 was inspected by Peter Hays with the Division of Reclamation,
Mining and Safety in advance of an anticipated succession of operator application transferring the reclamation
permit from Lafarge West, Inc. to the City of Greeley. Mrs. Anne Johnson with Lafarge was present during the
inspection. The site was previously inspected by the Division on April 18, 2002.
The Greeley West Pit has not been actively mined in a number of years. The site is owned by Flatirons
Construction and operated by Lafarge.
The City of Greeley issued a Request for Proposal seeking a consultant to amend the existing Division permit
and develop a new City Use by Special Review permit allowing mining and a water storage reservoir at the
site. The City is under contract to purchase the approximately 1 acre partially reclaimed gravel pit. The site
adjoins the City's existing Poudre Ponds Water Storage Reservoir (25 Avenue Site). The City of Greeley has
contracted Hall Irwin Corporation to excavate the existing clay seem and mine portions of the site.
The site is partially reclaimed. The City of Greeley has recently installed a chain -link fence around sections of
the site. The fence follows the approximate permit boundary, but appears to deviate from the approved
permit boundary at several locations. The site currently consists of four unlined lakes surrounded by
rangeland in various states of reclamation. The visual topsoil berms in the southeast corner of the site along
25 Avenue and a low scraper placed topsoil pile located at the northwest corner of the southeast lake remain
on site. The topsoil is intended to be used to reclaim the plant area and the area between the lakes in the
southern portion of the site.
Lafarge is continuing to maintain the site. The site is mowed and weed control measures are ongoing. Russian
Olives and salt cedars were removed from the site last year. Several of the lake shorelines have not been
completely resloped. Stockpiles of overburden were observed along the south end of the northeast lake and
the north side of the southeast lake.
The Division currently holds a reclamation bond in the amount of $144,826, which appears adequate to
reclaim the site based on the observations from this inspection.
Inspection Contact Address
Mrs. Anne Johnson
Lafarge West, Inc.
10170 Church Ranch Way, Ste. 200
Westminster, CO 80021
Cc: Tom Kaldenbach; DRMS
OBSERVATIONS
PERMIT #: M -1977 -081
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: PSH
INSPECTION DATE: October 6, 2011
