September 20, 2011 C- 1981 - 019 /Colowyo Coal Mine JHB
East Taylor pond had been cleaned of sediment. The pond has not been resurveyed since the clean out was
completed in August 2011. Hand seeding had been done on the side slopes that were disturbed during the sediment
clean out operation. The East Taylor pond was discharging 0.04 on the staff on the 30" flume. Inflow into the
pond appears to be primarily from spoil springs that have surface expression on the east and west sides of the
reclaimed drainage to East Taylor pond. The west spring appears to have a steady flow which is directed into East
Taylor pond. CCC has not tried to measure the flow into the pond from the springs. The spring on west side of
the drainage has a more diffuse expression and is more of a seep. The repaired outslope of the pond has held up,
but Canada thistle are becoming established on the repair. Spot weed control is advised before these noxious
weeds can get established and become problematic. September is a recommended time for Canada thistle spraying
according to the local weed district.
West Taylor pond was discharging 0.04 on the flume. Effluent was clear. Canada and Musk thistle are becoming
established on the outslope of this pond. Spot weed control is advised to keep these noxious species from
becoming problematic.
West Pit pond was holding a shallow pool of water but was not discharging. No problems were observed with this
pond.
Gossard Pond was being cleaned of sediment at the time of the inspection. This sediment clean out is part of
regular maintenance. Gossard pond was not discharging.
Rail Loop pond was holding water but not discharging. Chip indicated he would have some of the inflow
sediment removed this fall while he has the equipment availalble.
Stoker Pond held water but was not discharging.
Streeter Pond was discharging 0.08 on the gauge on the flume. No problems were noted with this pond. The
ground around the flume continues to be damp, but there is no sign of leakage from the flume.
Gulch A Pond was holding a shallow pool of water well below the discharge elevation. This pond was cleaned of
sediment in 2010. No problems were observed with this pond.
Prospect pond was discharging at a trickle not measurable in the flume. A sediment fan is building up at the inlet
of the pond. CCC will evaluate for regular sediment clean out maintenance.
Section 28 Pond was dry. The outslope of this pond embankment remains thinly vegetated.
Work Area pond riser was being repaired. Portions of the riser pipe had rusted which was resulting in seepage
through the riser. CCC has excavated the riser and will replace the damage pipe. The operator does not think that
the pipe through the embankment is damaged, but should verify this. Water from the work area pond has been
pumped up to the upper warehouse pond. These two pond work in conjunction and pumping between the ponds is
acceptable practice. The Water trucks fill from pumps at the upper pond for dust control throughout the mine.
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 1
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 1
Page 4 of 9
