Geochemistry Review 4 23 August 2011 <br />May Day Conversion CN -1 File No. M- 1981 -185 <br />3) Rule 6.4.21(7)(d) Facilities Evaluation <br />The Applicant states that an engineered approved sump will be installed adjacent to the tailings <br />disposal location to evaluate leachate generation. The Applicant must commit to sampling and <br />analyzing any leachate that collects in the sump as soon as sufficient volume for sampling has <br />been produced, and at future frequencies to be determined in consultation with the Division. <br />The list of analytes must be approved in advance by the Division. <br />4) Rule 6.4.21(8)(e) Potential Impacts to Surface and Ground Water <br />The Applicant states "if necessary cement will be added to solidify materials that are <br />saturated". The Applicant must describe the criteria that will be used to determine if the <br />addition of cement is needed. <br />5) Rule 6.4.21(19) Disposal of Tailings in Mine Workings <br />The Applicant states "....chronic aquatic life basic standards will be used as the performance <br />criteria". Bccausc: 1) this site is in close proximity to the La Plata River, 2) ground water at <br />lower elevations of the permit area likely discharges to the river, and 3) the reasonable current <br />and future uses of the river at a minimum include both drinking water and aquatic life habitat, it <br />is the determination of the Division that the Applicant should be held to compliance with the <br />most stringent criteria in tables 1 through 4 of the basic standards for ground water as <br />established by the Colorado Water Quality Control Commission. <br />
