Hickenlooper
Governor
Mike King
Executive Director
Loretta Pineda
Director
The Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety (DRMS) engineering staff has reviewed the
August 2011 Geotechnical Stability Exhibit. The following comments are posed to demonstrate
the general incompleteness of the submitted Exhibit:
1. Page 3 second paragraph, the applicant references Attachment D -2, Figure D -2 for steel
sets on the May Day No. 1 Portal. There are no steel sets mentioned or located in
Attachment D -2, Figure D -1 or Figure D -2.
a. DRMS found the naming and related references to work plans in Exhibit D to be
inconsistent, if not confusing. For example the green cut sheet for the referenced
Attachment D -2 is labeled "6.4.4 Exhibit D — Mining Plan, Attachment 2 — Portal
Collapse Repair Work Plan May Day No. 1". The following cover sheet is
labeled "Exhibit D, Attachment D -2 ". In addition, all of the work plans with
figures included start with Figure D -1, Figure D -2, etc. As such, there are several
figures labeled "D -1 ". Both these practices are persistent through the rest of the
work plan attachments in Exhibit D.
2. Page 3 second paragraph, the applicant references Attachment D -3 for rock mechanics
portal repair recommendations for the May Day No. 1 Portal. Attachment D -3 is for
Little Deadwood Gulch May Day No. 2 drainage repair. DRMS could find no discussion
related to rock mechanics portal repair recommendations.
3. Page 4 fourth paragraph, the applicant references Figure 6.5 -2 for the Incas Road and
Chief Portal geotechnical drill program. The Incas Road is labeled on Figure 6.5 -2, but
not the Chief Portal. The Chief Portal should be labeled on the figure for future reference
and location.
4. Page 4, New Access Road. The second bullet references "New Access Road Stability
Report (Attachment 6.5 -3 and Attachment 6.5 -4) ". Attachment 6.5 -3 is the
"Geotechnical reconnaissance report" referenced in the first bullet and Attachment 6.5 -4
Office of Office of
Denver • Grand Junction • Durango Active and Inactive Mines
