D. Conclusions
Increasing groundwater levels coupled with increasing displacement measured on the surface and at
depth within the colluvium indicates that landslide activity at some areas is continuing to occur at
the Main Mine Site and in Sylvester Gulch. More water levels have reached record highs than in the
4 Quarter of 2008.
Mirror data shows much more movement than in the 4 Quarter of 2008. Movement appears to
have been concentrated in the months associated. with spring_thaw, which_follows the annual trend -
of recent years. The C -1 Conveyor mirrors are showing substantially less movement than in the last
quarter of 2008 suggesting the readings from September to December 2008 were a survey error.
There was much more movement at the inclinometers throughout both the Main Mine Site and
Sylvester Gulch than in the 4 Quarter of 2008. As with the mirror data, most of the movement
appears to have occurred in the spring months. Using the highly accurate/sensitive inclinometer
data, total movement during the spring of 2009 was less than the spring of 2008. Similarly, summer
and fall movement in 2009 was equal to or less than the movement from the same period in 2008.
Continued monitoring of the existing instruments located at the Main Mine Site and Sylvester
Gulch during the remainder of 2009 and into 2010 is recommended. The monitoring data are
required to track displacement trends and give an indication regarding the stability of critical
operational areas throughout the West Elk Mine.
Barr Engineering Company 1 ° ', 2 and 3' Quarters of 2009
06/26 -031 Geofechnical Monitoring
