OBSERVATIONS
PERMIT #: PF.Id
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: RCO
INSPECTION DATE: August 29, 2011
This was a routine inspection performed by the Division as part of its monitoring of Hard Rock /Metal
prospecting operations, approved under a Notice of Intent to Conduct Prospecting (NOI). The NOI was
approved and bond was posted earlier in 2011, but the operator has not commenced any activity here. The
site is located in upper Governor Basin and accessible via an existing road. There is a new steel gate installed
near the entrance to the site, but it was unlocked and open at the time of the inspection.
The site consists of a pre -law mine portal and waste rock dump. The underground opening is secured by a
locked steel grate. The portal structure consists of heavy timbers; it appears relatively new and is intact.
Tracks extend out of the portal and across the dump pad.
There is a discharge from the portal, which splits and flows off the dump in two directions. The NOI file
described and mapped the northerly route of the discharge, but nothing was included in the file about the
easterly route. It bears consideration to actively manage the discharge flow, to route it away from more
mineralized dump rock material or contact with metal debris. A few minutes with a shovel could close one of
the two discharge routes. Presently this is not a problem.
There are numerous old steel and wooden items of mining - related debris present in the northerly gully (where
part of the discharge flows) that slopes down the dump face. Some of the debris may be associated with the
pre -law mill once housed underground here. There is some more old debris piled on the north edge of the
dump surface itself, which appears to be associated with the cable tram tower that formerly served to carry
ore from this mine down to the bottom of this basin. (A significant structure, near the approved affected area
but not associated with the NOI, is an old, partially dilapidated boarding house. No disturbance under this NOI
will occur at the boarding house.)
There is a corrugated steel shed (12x15x10ft) on the pad. There is very little stored inside the shed presently,
but it is approved for use under this NOI. There are no windows in the shed, and the door is locked.
The waste rock dump is steep- sided, but does not appear to be eroding. The dump pad is level, and measures
about 100 x 100 ft. There is no ore or other materials stockpiled on the site. There is no berm at the crest.
There has been no activity since this site was approved and bonded. The bond is sufficient at this time. The
operator has been taking water quality samples, and forwarding the analyses to this office. Sampling will
continue as approved.
For questions regarding this report, please contact this inspector at the Division's Durango Field Office:
DRMS — Durango Field Office, 691 CR 233, Room A -2, Durango, CO 81301; Telephone: 970 - 247 -5193
Inspection Contact Address
Ken Orvis
The Mining Company, Inc.
21599 Hwy 550
Ridgway, CO 81432
CC: Karmen King, Grayling LLC, 18050 Rd G, Cortez, CO 81321
Page 2 of 3
