The applicant, Western Fuels -
Colorado, LLC (WFC) proposes to mine approximately 0.5 square miles in Montrose County,
northwest of the town of Nucla. WFC currently operates the nearby New Horizon Mine (Permit
No. C- 1981 -008).
I would like to request your assistance with evaluating the potential impacts of the proposed
operation on any Federally - listed Threatened and Endangered Species that may exist in the area.
WFC has consulted with the Colorado Division of Wildlife (CDOW) regarding State - listed
species. CDOW's response is provided in Appendix 2.05.6(2) -1 of the application.
Surface and coal within the proposed permit boundary are privately owned. Existing land uses,
as described in Section 2.04.3 of the application, are primarily agricultural (grazing land, pasture
land, and residential). Much of the area has been historically flood irrigated.
Pertinent portions of the permit application have been scanned for your reference, including:
Office of
Mined Land Reclamation
Section 2.04.3
Section 2.04.10
Section 2.04.11
Section 2.05.4(2)(e)
Section 2.05.5
Section 2.05.6(2)
Map 2.04.3 -1
Map 2.04.10 -1
Map 2.04.10 -2
Site Description and Land Use
Baseline Vegetation Study
Fish and Wildlife Resources Information
Revegetation Plan
Postmining Land Use
Fish and Wildlife Plan
Premining Land Use
Permit Area Vegetation Map
Adjacent Area Vegetation Map
COLORADO
D I V I S I O N O F
RECLAMATION
MINING
SAFETY
Office of
Denver • Grand Junction • Durango Active and Inactive Mines
