C <br />AREA DESCRIPTION <br />RESUII1'S AND DISCUSSION <br />The Nucla wildlife study area encompasses approximately 106 acres in the <br />southwest quarter of S25 T47N R16W approximately 3 miles northwest of Nucla, <br />Montrose County, Colorado (see Map 11 -1, Appendix A for study area <br />boundaries), <br />Topography and Precipitation. The Nucla wildlife study area is located among <br />flat to gently rolling farmland at an elevation of 5700 feet. Average annual <br />precipitation at the Union Carbide Weather Station (Uravan, Colorado) near <br />the Nucla study area for the years 1972 -1979 was 10.08 inches (range of <br />8.03 - 12.24 inches) much of which generally occurred between July and <br />September. <br />Vegetation and Soils. Five major vegetation types occur on the study area: <br />1. Upland sagebrush <br />2. Grassland pasture <br />3. Agriculture (Alfalfa field) <br />4. Juniper <br />5. Riparian <br />Of these five types, the agriculture and grassland vegetative types occupy <br />42 and 23 %, respectively of the total study area not presently disturbed by <br />mining operations (Mariah Associates 1979). Each vegetation type is <br />discussed separately below. <br />2pland sacebrush vecetation type.
