Mr. Phillip Woodard
Box 715
Ophir, CO 81426
Dear Mr. Woodard,
Attached you will find the bill for weed control at the Pathfinder Gravel pit for 2011. You will also find a map
showing the areas covered during that treatment.
The work was done on two occasions July 25 and August 5, 2011. Rain was a problem this year throughout the
season. I apologize for taking longer than anticipated getting to the site. We did go slightly over the estimated
$1000 that we discussed. The crew found more problem areas than anticipated when they were at the location
and assumed you would rather they continued than quit early. I hope this is not a problem.
The common weeds treated included Canada thistle, musk thistle, yellow toadflax and oxeye daisy. We treated
a small number of plants of houndstongue. Houndstongue is on the state B list but is not locally common so is
treated as an A list species in San Miguel County meaning that there is no allowable population. Other plants
treated include black medic, yellow sweetclover and several native thistles that you indicated you wished to see
controlled. Other common nuisance weeds were treated but not noted on the daily reports.
As I mentioned when we spoke, this is not going to be a one year project. I would anticipate three years of
treatment at this location and then follow -up treatment after that time in order to prevent the noxious weeds from
reestablishing.
There is an effort underway in Colorado to create a "weed free gravel program ". It would operate similar to the
existing weed free forage program and would be strictly voluntary. It would create a product that could be
offered at higher price and that may be required in the future for work on some public lands and by some
educated landowners. I assume that at some point this could become an active gravel mine again so maintaining
it in as weed free of a condition as possible will be useful.
Please don't hesitate to contact me if there is anything else I can do for you. My contact information is above.
I look forward to working with you again.
Sheila ro ' er
San Miguel County Weed Control Program Manager
San Miguel County Weed Control Program
Box 130
Norwood, CO 81423
970 327 -0399 Phone 970 327 -4090 Fax
email- sheilag(aisanmigueleounty.org
August 23, 2011
