The dominant species is cottonwood (Populus deltoides) with an understory
composed of grasses, small shrubs, Russian olive, and local patches of poison ivy of various densities from
nearly complete cover to sparsely distributed plants. Canopy cover ranges from about 40% to 100 %. Tree
density ranges from about 30 trees per acre to 125 trees per acre. In recently abandoned meanders (last 30
years, more or less) the understory is very dense and sometimes nearly impenetrable. In those locations the
understory is dominated by willows, Tamarix, Russian olive, and various vines that create a thick, jungle -like
appearance.
Drainage Riparian: This is a special form of the Riparian Forest unit described above. This unit only occurs
along the occasional drainage ditches that carry water from upland areas to the north across the bottomland
areas to the river. These drainages help to reduce flooding by runoff from upland areas which may be occupied
2
