August 23, 2011 C -1981- 035 /King Coal Mine MLT
automatically. Back - flushing happened to occur during the inspection, and we observed that
the flow runs down a natural, vegetated slope NW of the storage tank, causing some erosion
of the soils. Surface drainage from this area does run to the sedimentation pond, but eroding
a natural slope is not desirable. Mr. Jarvis said they would improve the situation, probably
by extending the pipe (-3 inches in diameter) along the roadway and into the roadside ditch.
The mine also has an 8 million gallon sump underground which is available for water
storage.
RECLAMATION SUCCESS - Rule 4.15, Rule 3:
• The metal building at King I was in the process of being dismantled.
REVEGETATION — Rule 4.15
Vegetative Cover; Timing:
During the previous inspection (July 2011), it was noted that weed control operations were
partially completed. On this inspection, we observed that kochia has been effectively
sprayed (although not required by the Rules) and musk thistle eradication has been
accomplished. A few Canada thistle rosettes were observed on the reclaimed water line
corridor south of the storage tank; no other noxious weeds were seen.
Weed control efforts have been outstanding this season.
SUPPORT FACILITIES - Rule 4.04:
The northernmost bay in the equipment shop was originally constructed as a wash bay, with a
channel drain that flowed to an oil separator / sump. The wash bay has been moved outside
to the north side of the building, and the channel drain has been filled with concrete and
painted with epoxy similar to the remainder of the shop floor.
• At the oil storage shed, large fuel tanks are set within a reinforced concrete foundation with a
concrete floor, providing secondary containment. 55- gallon drums are stored on a grate, and
elevated over the concrete containment area. Five - gallon buckets and rebuilt equipment parts
are generally stored on specialized pallets which provide secondary containment.
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 2
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 0 Page 3 of 4
