EPA Step Test Process
Final Design Concept
Pilot Project Drilling and Completion Plan
March 14, 2011
a. Once hole has reached Total Depth (T.D.) Circulate and Condition Hole for (1) hour using drilling
fluid
b. Trip out of Hole lay down directional drilling BHA
c. Pick -up pressure recording device and 7 5/8" 26.4 # cased hole packer
i. pressure recording device. attached and ran under packer assembly
d. Trip In Hole (T.I.H.) with test assembly
e. At –1900' ( + -50' above casing shoe) circ thru assembly
f. Set casing packer (rotate to the right while lowering pipe)
g. Monitor annuls for any drop in fluid level
h. Tie -in BOP testing unit (with chart type recording device) to standpipe /drill string on rig
i. Using testing unit — pressure up on drill string in (25) psi increments holding pressure for 15 minutes at
each increment to calculated (B.H.P.).
i. EPA pressure requirement for test of (130) psi above water hydrostatic pressure or
8.33 ppg (water) X 0.052 X Depth (2400')= -4170 psi Bottom Hole Pressure (B.H.P.)
ii. Actual test pressures during test will be determined by current mud weight of fluid used in
testing procedure, it is anticipated that fluid weight used will be 8.6- 9.0 ppg.
NOTE: Calculation for added surface pressure requirement for meeting test pressure stipulations is
dependent upon fluid weight in drill string and calculated prior to test.
Once final /calculated test pressure has been reached and monitored for (60) minutes, bleed drill string
pressure off, release packer and trip out of the hole lay down pressure recording device.
Download pressure recording device information from tool, correlate with graph on BOP testing unit
and prepare testing summary document for submission to agency.
Alternative Testing Procedure (Using Freshwater)
1. Pick -up pressure recording device and packer assembly and TIH to + -1900'
2. Circulate calculated volume of drill pipe with clear water
3. Set Packer, monitor annulus for any drop in fluid level
4. Using BOP testing unit, pressure up in (25) psi increments holding pressure for 15 minutes at each
increment (monitor annulus for any evidence of packer leaking) to EPA required final test pressure
of 130 psi.
5. Once final/calculated test pressure has been reached monitor pressure for (60) minutes,
NOTE: If annulus flow indicates packer leaking during test, bleed off pressure, unset packer, move
pipe 5 -10', start procedure from beginning.
6. At conclusion of test release pressure - release packer -Trip out of hole -lay down assembly —
download recording device information - prepare summary of test using data from recorder and
BOP testing unit graph and prepare testing summary document for submission to agency..
1
