COMPANY L.L.C.
A Subsidiary of Arch Westem Bituminous Group, LLC
January 13, 2011
MOUNTAIN COAL
Mr. Tom Kaldenbach 0 '
Colorado Division of Reclamation Mining and Safety
Office of Mined Land Reclamation 44
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, Colorado 80203
Re: Mountain Coal Company, LLC, West Elk Mine; Permit No. C- 1980 -007; Quarterly
Summary of Subsidence Observations, 4 Quarter 2010
Dear Mr. Kaldenbach:
Mountain Coal Company, LLC (MCC) began longwall mining the E -seam in late November
2008. Lonwall panel El was mined -out by 3 quarter 2010. MCC had longwall mined up to
cross -cut 31 in panel E2 by the end of 4 quarter 2010. The area potentially affected by
mining was inaccessible for the quarterly site inspection because of snow cover and
consequently, the ground surface was not visible. Mining was not within a mile of Monument
Dam or within the angle of draw of any Forest Service road. Several stock ponds were
undermined without any notable effects. The stock ponds will be inspected again for post
mining effects when road and weather conditions permit. Routine inspection reports for
Monument Dam, Forest Service roads, and stock ponds are included with this letter. For the
period of time before snow, there were no visible signs of subsidence induced features.
Sincerely,
Ryan V.
