<br />B3-17 to 26 inches; pale brown (10YR 6/3) very gravelly
<br />sandy loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; weak fine
<br />subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, very
<br />friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; 58 percent
<br />gravel; thin patchy clay films on peds; mildly al-
<br />kaline; diffuse wavy boundary.
<br />IIC-26 to 60 inches; pale brown (10YR 6/3) very gravelly
<br />sand, brown (10YR 5/3) moist; single grained;
<br />loose; 70 percent gravel; mildly alkaline.
<br />The Al horizon is fine sandy loam or sandy loam 4 to 10
<br />inches thick. It contains 5 to 20 percent coarse fragments.
<br />It is slightly acid to moderate alkaline. The B2t horizon is
<br />15 to 35 percent coarse fragments. It is medium acid to
<br />mildly alkaline. The contrasting IIC horizon is slightly acid
<br />to mildly alkaline.
<br />Ca —Cabin sandy loam. This soil is on old terraces
<br />and high glacial benches. Slopes are 2 to 5 percent.
<br />Included with this soil in mapping are a few small
<br />areas of soils that are similar to Cabin soils but that
<br />have pockets of calcareous material in the IIC horizon
<br />or that are less than 5 feet- deep over sandstone or
<br />shale of the Coalmont Formation. Also included are
<br />small areas of Tiagos soils on narrow, low ridges.
<br />Runoff is medium. The hazard of soil blowing is
<br />severe, and the hazard of water erosion is moderate.
<br />Most of the acreage of this soil is used for grazing.
<br />A small acreage is irrigated and used for hay and
<br />pasture. If this soil is irrigated, an organic mat 1 to 4
<br />inches thick generally forms on the surface and bright,
<br />rust - colored mottles form throughout the profile. Capa-

<br />Carlstrom series
<br />The Carlstrom series consists of moderately deep,
<br />well drained soils that formed in weathered shale. The
<br />soils are underlain by clay shale at a depth of 20 to 40
<br />inches. They are on rolling uplands between elevations
<br />of 8,000 and 8,800 feet. Slopes are 5 to 15 percent. The
<br />native vegetation is mainly bluebunch wheatgrass,

<br />junegrass, big sagebrush, and low rarer 4tru h The
<br />mean annual precipitation is 10 to 12 inches, the mean
<br />annual air temperature is 3; to 38 F, and the frost -
<br />free season is 30 to 40 days.
<br />In a representative profile the surface Jaye • is brown
<br />clay about 7 inches thick. The underlying: material is
<br />pale brown clay. Shale is at a depth of about 26 inches.
<br />Permeability is slow, and available water capacity is

<br />The profile is generally noncalcar-An .0- •nughout,. but a
<br />very thin, discontinuous, weakly calcareous horizon is
<br />immediately above the shale in some Ogees. Reaction ranges
<br />from slightly acid to moderately alkaline.
<br />Carlstrom soils are mapped only in association with
<br />Crespin soils.
<br />Chedsey series
<br />The Chedsey series consists of mode -atelr.. deep,
<br />well drained soils that formed in material weathered
<br />from Chugwater Shale. The soils: are :underlain by
<br />weathered shale at a depth of 20 to 40 inches. They are
<br />on valley sides and mountain toe slopes belay, een eleva-
<br />tions of 8,200 and 9,000 feet. Slopes are 5o12 percent.
<br />The native vegetation is mainly Idaho fescue, . big blue-
<br />grass, western wheatgrass, nodding brome, buck-
<br />wheat, big sagebrush, and low rabbitbrus Y. The mean
<br />annual precipitation is 18 to 20 inches, the mean . an-
<br />nual air temperature is 35° to 37° F, and the frost -
<br />free season is 30 to 35 days.
<br />In a representative profile, a layer of . undecomposed
<br />organic material 1 inch thick is on the : surface. The
<br />surface layer is brown loam about 6 inches thick. The
<br />subsurface layer is light . brown : loam about 7 . inches
<br />thick. The subsoil is reddish brown clay .loam about 23
<br />inches thick. The underlying material is soft reddish
<br />brown interbedded shale and siltstone.
<br />Permeability is slow, and available water - capacity
<br />is moderate.
<br />These soils are used mainly for grazing.
