Peristaltic Pump Method — The sample is collected through a section of new, clean, flexible
Tygon (polyvinylchloride) tubing. The tubing intake will be secured manually or by attaching
weights.
Dissolved metals samples will be filtered using a 0.45 micron disposable filter. The water sample will
be pumped through the filter using a vacuum pump. An aliquot of approximately 100 ml will be run
through the filter prior to collection into the sample containers, unless using sterile filters. A new filter
will be used at each sample location.
Field Parameter Measurements
Water collected from each well or surface sampling location should be measured (in a separate
container) for pH, temperature and conductivity using an appropriate meter. Field parameters will be
recorded on the sample collection form or sample log book and completed for each location sampled.
A minimum of three readings should be read. Reading of more than three readings may be
necessary until the field parameters have stabilized.
Sample Preservation, Handling, and Analytical Methods
Dissolved metals samples will be filtered using a 0.45 micron filter prior to filling the sample bottles.
These samples will be acidified with nitric acid to a pH less than 2.0.
•Proper packaging and shipment of samples will minimize the potential for sample breakage, leakage,
or cross contamination and will provide a clear record of sample custody from collection to analysis.
Bottle labels are required for every sample bottle used to send to the laboratory for analyses. Each
bottle label will contain the following information:
• Climax Mine and address.
• The date and time the sample was collected.
• The parameters are to be analyzed.
• The sample location (sample point i.e., #7)
• The sampler's name
A Chain -of- Custody (COC) is required for every sample collected and sent to the laboratory for
analyses. Each COC will contain, at a minimum; the following information:
• Climax Mine and address.
• The purchase order number.
• The date and time the sample was collected.
• Sample matrix (i.e. DW, SW, GW)
• The number of containers.
• The parameters are to be analyzed.
• The sample location (sample point i.e., #7)
• Field parameters (i.e., pH, temperature, conductivity, depth to water or other remarks).
The sampler's name
• Relinquished by (whoever relinquishes sample will sign their name and identify the time and
date that the cooler was sealed for shipment).
PRINTED DOCUMENTS ARE UNCONTROLLED
