Mail
contractors and freighters were put out of business. Farmers
immediately felt the effect of this when there was no sale for long
grain and hay. The country was thrown in competition with the
outside world. As a consequence, grain farming for profit was a thing
of the past because of loss of home market and high freight rates for
outside markets (Gray 1941).
Gold was discovered in Colorado in 1859 and led to an influx of prospectors to the
area. Numerous claims were made in northwestern Colorado. The Upper Yampa River
yielded coal along its outcroppings. Seams were worked and coal was transported by wagon
for use in the area by locals ( Mehls and Mehls 1991:35). Transportation presented a problem
for the miners and development was limited for that reason. Around the late 1800s oil and
gas were located in the region and a short-lived boom took place in Rangely in 1902.
Although this was not economically viable at the time, light production continued through the
1930s. The World War II era stimulated increased development and the region has since
experienced a cycle of boom and bust.
Summary of Files Search and Literature Overview
Files searches for this project were made through the offices of the Colorado
Historical Society and the BLM (Lucas Piontkowski, July 7, 2011) indicated one cultural
resource (5MF6447) was previously recorded within the project area. This site was revisited
and reevaluated with the present project. Table 1 provides a list of the previously recorded
resources within about 1 mile of the project area and Table 2 lists the previously conducted
inventories in the nearby vicinity.
Table 1.
