The depth of the drill hole will be approximately 210 feet but may extend to 300'
feet if a sufficient quantity of water is not initially encountered.
5.b.5. This water well will be completed in the upper sandstone aquifer in the Morrison
Formation which underlies the Dakota Formation. This is the only aquifer that is
expected to be encountered. The depth and characteristics of this aquifer have been
estimated utilizing logs for wells in the surrounding area in addition to geologic logs for
the proposed mine area.
5.b.6. It is expected that only one drill hole will be required but in the case that an
insufficient water quantity is encountered, additional holes may be drilled in the same
general location. If additional holes are necessary, the abandoned holes will be properly
plugged and reclaimed in accordance with DRMS regulations as shown in Attachment 3.
5.b.7. This hole will be finished as a water well. This well has been issued permit
number 285654 by the Division of Water Resources. The permit is included as
Attachment 6.
Item 6: In response to a 2008 request to conduct monitoring well drilling at the New Horizon
North Mine area, the Colorado Division of Wildlife (CDOW) conducted a threatened and
endangered species (T &E) review for the subject area (T47N, R16W Section 25) which is
included as Attachment 5 . Based on this review by CDOW and subsequent correspondence
with them related to the NHN Mine permit application, the only species of concern for the area is
the Burrowing Owl (Athene Cunicularia). This species has no formal federal designation as a
threatened or endangered species but it is listed as a threatened species in Colorado. Though
there are no Burrowing Owls known to exist within this area, the CDOW recommends
restrictions on drilling activities within 300 feet of a prairie dog colony since the burrowing owls
may utilize abandoned burrows as nests. As recommended by CDOW, in 2008 and 2009 field
surveys were conducted by IME Environmental Consultants to map the extent of the existing
Prairie Dog colonies within the NHN Mine area. Locations of the colonies are included on the
location map in Attachment 1. Based on this mapping, there are no Prairie Dog colonies within
300 feet of the proposed drilling location.
► Page 2
