Outfall 002 values were 5 ug/1 on April 20, 11 ug/1 on May 5
and 7 ug/1 on June 16. Outfall 004 values were 14 ug/1 on May 16 and 8 ug/1 on June 13
(the 3 ug/1 value for April 5 was not an excursion).
In the previous three years (2008- 2010), neither Outfall exceeded the 4.6 ug/1 selenium
limit. It is unknown as to why these exceedances occurred, although we suspect it may be
due to the record snowfall and rainfall, and near- record snowmelt runoff that occurred in
Routt County this winter and spring. Perhaps that unusually high runoff somehow
mobilized the selenium. In any case, we hope that these excursions are transitory, and
that the selenium values will drop in future months.
Please call me at 970 - 276 -5209, or email me at djones @peabodyenergy.com, if you have
any questions.
