July 18, 2011 C-1981-044/Williams Fork Mines JRS
RECLAMATION SUCCESS(cont.)-MCM has sprayed some of the thistle on the site(species seen include
bull, musk, Canadian and Scotch)but there were many live plants that did not appear to have been sprayed. While
there were small patches of thistle and individual plants seen on most areas of the mine, there was a large
concentration of mostly Scotch thistle observed on the northern perimeter of the reclaimed Mine No. 9 refuse pile.
Brian Watterson indicated that the contractor who sprayed the weeds may be waiting until fall to spray the thistle.
The Division questioned this approach and thought they should be sprayed before they go to seed. Brain was
unsure of the reason why they were not sprayed and said that he would talk to the contractor and get back with me.
Either way,the thistle on all areas of the site must be sprayed.
-MCM has removed the tamarisk that was on the north side of the haul road, just east of the underpass for
Colorado Highway 13. The tamarisk was cut down and the stumps were treated with herbicide.
- There is a lot of Russian Olive around the No. 5 Mine dewatering ponds(5-P5, 5-P6 and 5-P7)and along the
conveyor behind the Mine No. 5 shop building. While these are a lower priority than the knapweed and thistle,
MCM will need to remove these trees and treat the stumps.
SIGNS AND MARKERS—Rule 4.02:
- The operator has replaced the mine ID signs at the entrances to the site. The entrances include the main entrance
on the east side of Colorado Highway 13,the entrance by the old B&S building(on the east side of Hwy 13)and
the entrance to the Williams Fork Strip Pit(west side of Hwy 13). The signs contain all off the necessary
information. The old mine ID signs are still in place and will need to be removed ASAP to avoid confusion.
TOPSOIL—Rule 4.06 Removal 4.06.2; Substitute Materials 4.06.4(4); Storage and Protection 4.06.3;
Redistribution 4.06.4:
-The topsoil stockpile in the AVF area to the south of the coal stockpile/stacker tube was well vegetated and
stable. There was a small patch of Russian Knapweed on the pile that will need to be sprayed. The topsoil
stockpile sign was also down and will need to be replaced.
DOCUMENTS RECEIVED: None
This concludes the 18 July 2011 Williams Fork Mines inspection.
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: I
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 0
Page 4 of 6
