Peabldq
• PEABODY COAL COMPANY 1300 South Yale
W*storn Division Flagstaff,Arizona 86001
(602)774-5253
April 22, 1988
The following information summarizes Peabody's reclamation
and postmining land use plan for the proposed Nucla East
mine. Regulations require that the legal or equitable
landowners who will be affected by mining and reclamation
operations be allowed to comment on the proposed postmining
land use of the affected lands .
The proposed postmining land use for the reclaimed lands in
the Nucla East area is agricultural production, similar to
the premining land use. This land use is to be achieved
through a combination of irrigated pasture and dryland
pasture. Irrigated pasture will be the predominant use,
with the majority of the 235 acre permit area reclaimed to
this type. The areas which were not irrigated before
mining and had a dry sagebrush type vegetation cover will
be reclaimed to dryland pasture.
The irrigated pasture type will be planted to two different
mixes; one for drier upland sites, and one for lowland or
other sites that may be wet or boggy. The upland site seed
mix is composed of orchardgrass, Regar meadow brome, and
birdsfoot trefoil . Birdsfoot trefoil is a non-bloat legume
that has the ability to stay in the stand longer than
alfalfa and can also tolerate wetter conditions than
alfalfa. The grasses and the legume will be seeded in
alternate rows for better establishment and longer term
production of the legume. The lowland or poorly drained
site mix is composed of reed canarygrass and Garrison
creeping foxtail , along with birdsfoot trefoil . This mix
will be used in any wet areas that have developed, or are
likely to develop in a manner similar to those that existed
before mining. Both mixes, when established, will provide
a very productive and nutritious forage that can either be
pastured or cut for hay. Once Peabody has been released of
• its reclamation liability (a period of at least 10 years)
and the lands are returned to the appropriate landowners
