•
•
activities will include any necessary repair of rills or gullies (detailed at
the end of this Tab), reseeding, or grazing management. Grazing management will be
centered on the proper use by livestock of the dryland pasture areas in relation to the
associated irrigated pasture. These areas will not be irrigated and will only receive an
initial fertilizer application at the time of seeding.
Additional Revegetation Measures
The current narrow band of swale /drainage vegetation running north to west in the western
half of the permit area is anticipated at this time to have only limited disturbance.
Most likely irrigation tailwater from adjacent fields will still flow in this drainage,
supporting the present vegetation to varying degrees. Any disturbances in this area will
be seeded with Seed Mix #6 - Irrigated Pasture Mix, Poorly- drained Sites. If the present
willow (Salix exiqua) densities are significantly impacted, groupings of willows will be
planted in one -half acre blocks. Willow plant materials will be selected as cuttings from
local stands or commercially available adapted Salix species. The planting rate for areas
requiring reestablishment will be 1000 stems /acre.
In order to provide escape cover for upland game birds several field borders are to be
planted to a hedgerow composed of Russian olive (Eleagnus angustifolia) and cotoneaster
(cotoneaster acutifolia). Both species provide excellent escape and nesting cover for
upland game birds, while the fruits of these species are relished both by songbirds and
upland game birds (Shaw 1974 and Martin et al. 1961). The hedgerows, totalling 1400 feet
in length, will be planted with the above two species in an alternating pattern spaced 5 -8
feet apart. The estimated location of these hedgerows are shown on Exhibit 22 -2 "Postmining
Vegetation Map - Nucla East ".
Two groupings of cottonwood (Populus anqustifolia and P. sargentii) and mulberry (Morus
rubra) plantings will be established in the locations shown on Exhibit 22 -2. Planting
densities in each area will be 25 cottonwoods and 15 mulberry. The mulberry and
cottonwoods will be alternately placed in the planting area with a spacing of 10 -15 feet.
The plantings will be made in a single row along the field boundaries to maintain the
integrity and management of the irrigated pastures.
Seed Mix #3, detailed earlier in the revegetation methods for the current Nucla Mine, will
be used at the Nucla East area for temporary stabilization of disturbed areas which will
22 Revised 07/25/91
