TAB 22
REVEGETATION PLAN
Introduction
The following Revegetation Plan details the methods and materials required to revegetate
and stabilize lands affected by surface mining at the currently active Nucla Mine (Permit
No. C-81-008) and the Nucla East area. The following plan has been divided into two
subsections based on differences in the revegetation plans for the active Nucla Mine and
the Nucla East area. Variations in the postmining land uses between the two locations
also dictate that the plan be presented as such. In most cases, the two subsections will
contain methods and materials unique to each area. However, there are situations where
methods or materials proposed for the Nucla East area are similar to those for the current
Nucla Mine area. An example would be the use of the same Topsoil Stockpile/Temporary
Stabilization Mix (Mix #3) for both areas. Proper cross-referencing is made in these
situations. It is felt that this approach will minimize confusion or misunderstanding as
to what materials and methods are applicable to the two areas. The revegetation plan
presented for the current Nucla Mine remains relatively unchanged from that presented in
the approved Permit C-81-008.
Active Nucla Mine (Permit No. C-81-008)
Postmining Land Use. According to public comment on Peabody Coal Company's 1976 Nucla
Mine Permit Application, the area residents want abandoned cropland returned to cropland.
Therefore, a significant portion of the site will be seeded as dryland pasture to provide
a perennial forage crop for harvest by livestock. The area to be reclaimed to dryland
pasture, located in the S 1/2 SW 1/4 Sec 25 (T47N R16W), has the greatest possibility of
being irrigated in the future. While Peabody will not irrigate these pastures, water
availability to the north of this area will provide the postmine landowner with
opportunities for irrigation. The remaining postlaw reclaimed" areas will be rangeland
with areas of riparian vegetation established along the main drainage channel west of the
County Landfill and in areas reclaimed around Sediment Ponds 001 and 006. Agriculture
related to livestock grazing with incidental use by wildlife is to be the postmining land
use. The riparian reclaimed areas in the drainage will have a greater importance to
wildlife.
22-1 Revised 04/11/88
