and excessive stratification over depth. This single lift of topsoil will primarily be <br /> utilized, whenever feasible, in postmine dry pastureland areas. <br /> 810 - Typic Haplaquolls, Deep. The Typic Haplaquolls (deep) are located on the poorly <br /> drained, nearly level to very gently sloping drainage channels and low areas immediately <br /> north of Calamity Draw. The soil within this map unit is typically deep, having a dark <br /> colored, organic matter enriched surface horizon and gleyed (mottled) subsurface horizons. <br /> Depth to ground water is typically less than 0.5 feet during the irrigation season. <br /> Based upon two sampled profiles, no suitable topsoil is available to be salvaged from this <br /> map unit. Unsuitable levels of carbonates occur in the upper ten inches of these <br /> profiles. Therefore, a 0.0 foot topsoil recovery is utilized for Map Unit 810 (Table <br /> 21-4). However, if isolated areas of recoverable topsoil are encountered in Map Unit 810, <br /> they will be salvaged and primarily utilized, whenever feasible, in the postmine dry <br /> pastureland areas. <br /> Topsoil Salvage Techniques. Before any area at the proposed Nucla East Mine site other <br /> than a proposed topsoil stockpile site is significantly disturbed, the suitable topsoil <br /> material will be removed to the depth specified in Tables 21-4 and 21-5 and Exhibits 9-3 <br /> and 9-6. Suitable topsoil will be salvaged from all significant disturbance areas <br /> including sediment ponds (includes pond area, embankment, and spillway for sites located <br /> down drainage of mining activities), haul roads, access road, mining area (includes box <br /> cut spoil and highwall reduction area, spoil stockpile areas, dragline erection site, <br /> office and shop area, explosive storage area, and diversion ditches (Table 21-5). Topsoil <br /> will be removed from all cut and fill slopes. No topsoil will be salvaged from the light <br /> use roads utilized for environmental monitoring or power line corridors, except where cut <br /> and fills are required. Prior to topsoil removal, vegetation which is too large for <br /> incorporation into the topsoil will be scraped away and combined with the overburden. The <br /> remaining vegetation will be incorporated into the topsoil to help increase soil organic <br /> matter levels. To prevent unnecessary contamination, topsoil shall be salvaged a minimum <br /> of 10 to 15 feet from the edge of a road, embankment, ditch, cut slope, and toe of fill. <br /> Topsoil will be removed by using self-loading scrapers, push scrapers, or other rubber <br /> tired equipment. A dozer or road grader will also be used when needed to assist scraper <br /> • loading, to facilitate maximum topsoil recovery, and to help build and shape topsoil <br /> stockpiles.
